President William J. Clinton as a Practical Ethnomethodologist: A Single-Case Analysis of Successful Question-Answering Techniques in the 1998 Grand Jury Testimony

Abstract

This chapter has built on previous sociological research on the interactional organization of question/answer sequences in a range of institutional settings by applying it to the study of the 1998 presidential grand jury testimony. It has also extended prior research showing how President Clinton used commonsense knowledge and understanding to instruct the questioning attorneys and the overhearing audience (in particular the grand jury) on how to understand and interpret his actions and his previous testimony.
